Valentina

Frantic calls of a young lamb dominated the usual commotion heard daily upon entering the barn. It was Valentines Day, cold with bitter north wind. With 19 lambs, 15 ewes and a ram, the pen is a crowded and confusing area. Scanning the area the eyes quickly stopped at a small white lamb lying motionless on the ground along the far wall. Still wet and almost frozen this petit boy was clinging to life. Attempts to warm him were futile and he passed on slowly after. The young cries still echoed in the barn and another newborn was found walking aimlessly around in the opposite corner. A little girl, white, warm and dry. Normally mom would be right by also calling out to her young and the young ram would have been attended to but this was not the case. Iris, a young ewe born the previous year (also a bottle baby) was acting very peculiar and it was determined she had delivered the twins. Mother and daughter were put into a holding area (the afterbirth condo) to establish a bond but Iris's aggression to her newborn forced her removal. Numerous attempts to establish a connection failed and with no other choice little Valentina now had a new mom or moms.

Due to her feeding schedule and for our convenience she spends her evenings in the house and days at the barn. It is important that V remembers she is a lamb and not become estranged from the flock. Every morning and again in the evening you can find V bouncing along behind one of us, going to and from her classes in reality. So adorable it is hard not to get attached. Now with the sound of the barn door opening you can hear her excited call as she eagerly makes her way to the front of the pen.

So sweet, so loving, so cute. She likes me; she really likes me, a touching moment indeed.

Oh good, food's here.

Hey...it's up!!  I was hoping you would post this.  It is great.  Are the trips to the barn to prevent her from travelling the same road to motherhood as her mother??
