Crazy Horses

Another shades of Green acres story. Rather amusing now but at the time a tad scary to say the least.

Down Mud Lake Road, about 10 kilomteres from us (and 400 feet lower in elevation) live our dear friends and neighbours, the Farmers. Hmmm Farmers who are farmers; cute. Bill, Patty, Luke and Leila were exceptionally busy last winter with their sleigh rides and the King and I droppped by to offer our assistance. It was a crisp but sunny Sunday afternoon and numerous sleigh rides were happening that day. We were to be spoters, keep an eye on the passengers basically insuring all went well.

Mr King took round #1 and I chatted with Mizz Patty as she puttered in the barn. A half hour later I was informed it was my turn and I procceded out of the barn towards the awaiting sleigh about 50 feet down the road. As I approached the horses and sleigh began to move towards me quickly increasing their speed. Now how I am suppose to get on the sleigh with it moving so fast? Hello!!! That thought was quickly lost as I realized at a full gallop they were heading right towards me. I moved to the right so did they. Panic set in as I made a leap and dove into the snow to avoid the obvious collision.

Bill was frantically trying to gain control, the passengers had a mixed look of horror and confusion as the sleigh sped by me. My first thought was that my new snowsuit bought at Canadian Tire had spooked the horses, I felt terrible to be responsible for this event. I stood up and watched in disbelief as the horses proceeded through the bonfire, around the swing set dislodging passengers and hay bales as they went. Bill still had a firm grip on the reins but was now being dragged on the ground, pants around his knees and only his long johns protecting him from this bumpy ride. Quickly they dissappeared behind the barn heading down the lane to the woods.

THE HORSES HAVE GONE CRAZY, THE HORSES HAVE GONE CRAZY I screamed at the top of my lungs as I entered the barn. Mizz Patty immediately sounded the alarm "runaway horses (ooops I will retain that for future reference) and all scattered to assist. By this time the shattered sled and horses were at a standstill at the end of the lane about 1 foot from a series of trees. Shaken but no serious injuries to anyone the horses were led back to the barn and hitched up for another tour of the fields, passengers excluded this trip.

My fears and anguish of causing all of this by wearing my new snowsuit bought at Canadian Tire were put to rest and a loose bit claimed responsibility. Needless to say I was relieved and laughed along with the others as I related my "green acres" insight.

Never a dull moment with the Farmers and once again all was well at the Dell.
