The Buffet

I arrived in Thunder Bay January 28th, 2005. Winters in Toronto, well if you could call them winters were nothing compared to what was in store for me here. Snow, LOTS of snow. Similar to my time spent in Winnipeg and childhood memories of Lindsay, Ontario.

Good friends Teresa and Trudy were planning a visit during March break and getting out the snowshoes was definitely on the agenda. One rather enjoyable sunny day I ventured out to establish trails prior to their visit, my good deed for the day. A new experience for moi and I was definitely up for the challenge.

This wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be so exit the pastures and head into the woods for a little tour. Hmmmm not as easy as the wide open spaces, the snow was definitely softer but the thoughts of turning back never entered my mind.

Well isn't this just dandy. Here I am in the middle of the woods, in the middle of (almost) nowhere snowshoes still intact and now waist high in snow. Perfect, how am I going to get out of this mess? WAIT A MINUTE ! NEVER MIND THAT! I just realized I was a "sitting duck" for any and all wild, ravenous creatures that happened upon me. A buffet lunch and a substantial one at that, enough to feed a crowd. I carefully scanned the area. The coast was clear. I was safe for the moment. Can't call out for help as it would just sound the "dinner Bell" and DUH, who would actually hear me. Curses I was doomed.

It was a struggle but I did manage to free myself from the dinner table and being preoccupied with thoughts and visions of flesh being torn from my person I ventured forward rather than backtracking. Silly me. I trudged through the dense underbrush for what seemed like an eternity. Exhausted and ready to throw myself at the mercy of Mother Nature a clearing was spotted ahead.

Arriving there that huge burden of impending doom was lifted from my shoulders but where was I? Off in the not so near distance a small patch of red caught my eye. RED! The roof on the house was red. My life had been spared. I will survive to tell this tale.
