Willy Wonka

With an abundance of critters on the farm the feeding schedule is pretty much a daily routine. At the time we had 9 dogs of assorted shapes and sizes, 2 were more outdoor animals and the "group of 7" enjoyed the comforts of the house. All slept indoors each evening having their own specific sleeping areas. The "group of 7" were fed in 2 time slots. The 4 larger ones feasted each evening at around 6 pm and the 3 smaller ones were fed along with the remaining 2 at bedtime. Dinner time was an exciting event. Like their owners our dogs love their food. Round #1 was completed and I noticed Stormy was not that interested in dinner tonight. The other 3 were chomping down and Tequilla was doing his typical "inhaling" of his food rather that chewing it. Hence the nickname Hoover.

Hershey Girl had finished her dinner and was under the diningroom table nibbling on something. Better check this out. A sickening feeling came over me as I realized a once full bag (3 to 4lbs of chocolate chips used in my baking for the Farmers Market) now contained less then a dozen pieces. I HAVE KILLED THE DOG, first thought that entered my mind. I was at a loss, what do I do? I knew dogs and chocolates were a dangerous combination but have never been exposed to a situation like this before.

Stormy ended that thought process with her regurgitation of kibbles and bits smothered in a semi sweet chocolate sauce. That seemed to get the ball rolling and the other 3 dogs joined in the festivities. Very thoughtfull of them. I ran to the kitchen for the paper towels and was actually relieved that this feeding frenzy had been shared by 4 rather than 1. Less likelihood of death occurring.

Upon my return to the scene of the crime I was dumbfounded to see not only the original 4 going back for seconds but the smaller 3 had ventured out from the mudroom and were consumed in devouring this warm buffet. Yelling, screaming I attempted to chase them away and clean up the mess but I was overpowered as the second feeding had decided to revamp itself for a third course. At one point there were 7 dogs puking and at the same time trying to go back for seconds, thirds, fourths and so on and so on.

I laugh about it now but at the time I was beside myself. I eventually did regain control and was able to slowly limit the menu and in time the barfings reduced in size and thankfully stopped. Physically and emotionally draining I collasped on the couch. My ordeal was over and I was confident that no loss of life would haunt me for eternity.

My groceries had been left on the diningroom table and 1 of the chairs was not pushed in so this gave Oliver access to all the goodies there. Of course he would have to pick the most dangerous thing I dog could consume but I commend him for sharing it rather than hogging it all and giving this story a happy ending.

Michael...

this is it...why didn't you say...Alison, get your butt over here...I just wrote the most hilarious story about barfing dogs that will make all your whining seem ridiculous!  Good God Michael.  Here is my dirty little secret...I can handle kid barf, poop and snot and even all three at once.  I cannot handle animal sic.  At all.  Once I cleaned up dog barf and then I had to clean up my own.

Somebody told me once that it wasn't true about the chocolate thing...

My...still getting nasty visuals about this whole thing.  I hope I can sleep at night!

I have truly enjoyed reading your site!!  Of course I have to comment on the barfing brood...We have 5 cats and a dog currently so there is always someone in trouble with people food and the lovely presents left behind for the people to clean up (that would be me).  I have a cat who will do anything to find chocolate.  I was told by my vet that yes chocolate is not a good idea for pets, but the baking chocolate is by far worse.  I also didn't realize onions were a hazard as well.
Love the pictures....you have my dream!  Enjoy it!

What a nightmare!  I'm glad eveyone was okay when all was said and done!

Came over via Alison's space and was delightfully surprised to read your home town was Lindsay.  I grew up in nearby Little Britain and graduated from LCVI.  Haven't been back for a couple decades now.

Anyways...I enjoyed your photo album so much.  I miss the farm..especially the newborn kittens and my chickens.

I'll be back to see how farm life is treating you.

Ah, the sad tale of bulimic dogs.  I love this story, it cracks me up.  It has all the makings of a Hollywood movie: greed, eating disorders, sharing, more greed, vomiting, a risk of death, and a happy ending.  Who has the movie rights?  I vote for a Disney rendition!
